{"id":4812,"date":"2026-01-05T09:00:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T09:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ecoexhaust.eu\/scr-retrofit-for-fjord-shipping-as-reefer-vessels\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T10:26:53","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T10:26:53","slug":"scr-retrofit-for-fjord-shipping-as-reefer-vessels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ecoexhaust.eu\/en\/scr-retrofit-for-fjord-shipping-as-reefer-vessels\/","title":{"rendered":"SCR Retrofit for Fjord Shipping AS Reefer Vessels"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecoexhaust.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/fjord-shipping-statek.jpg\" alt=\"SCR for Fjord shipping\" class=\"wp-image-4790\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ecoexhaust.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/fjord-shipping-statek.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.ecoexhaust.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/fjord-shipping-statek-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ecoexhaust.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/fjord-shipping-statek-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ecoexhaust<\/strong> designed, manufactured and supported the installation of <strong>Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems<\/strong> on <strong>three reefer vessels operated by Fjord Shipping AS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The retrofit achieved approximately <strong>90% NOx reduction<\/strong>, corresponding to <strong>IMO Tier III emission levels<\/strong>, on <strong>2,190 kW MAN two-stroke main engines<\/strong> originally manufactured in <strong>1990<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Scope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The project scope covered the retrofit of existing vessels with <strong>marine SCR systems<\/strong>, designed to operate within the technical constraints of legacy two-stroke engines and limited available space.<br>The installation was coordinated with the vessels\u2019 scheduled <strong>class renewal<\/strong> to minimize off-hire time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Engineering Assessment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A feasibility study was conducted to define the relevant engine operating conditions and installation constraints, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exhaust gas temperature range<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exhaust gas mass flow<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Available space in the engine room and funnel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To accurately confirm installation feasibility, <strong>3D laser scanning<\/strong> was performed in the funnel area, where space limitations were most critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">System Design<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the collected data, Ecoexhaust developed a custom SCR system and adapted the main engine exhaust configuration accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The design included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Compact SCR reactor geometry suitable for limited funnel space and restricted exhaust gas backpressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bypass valves allowing engine operation without SCR, reducing catalyst exposure during non-SCR operation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optimized exhaust gas distribution upstream of the catalyst<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CFD calculations <\/strong>were used to verify the static mixer design and confirm uniform flow distribution across the catalyst blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"434\" height=\"556\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecoexhaust.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/fjord-shipping-projekt.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4800\" style=\"width:434px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ecoexhaust.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/fjord-shipping-projekt.png 434w, https:\/\/www.ecoexhaust.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/fjord-shipping-projekt-234x300.png 234w, https:\/\/www.ecoexhaust.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/fjord-shipping-projekt-117x150.png 117w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manufacturing, Installation and Commissioning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The SCR systems were manufactured by Ecoexhaust and delivered to the shipyard during the vessels\u2019 class renewal period.
