Ecoexhaust<\/strong> designed, manufactured and supported the installation of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems<\/strong> on three reefer vessels operated by Fjord Shipping AS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The retrofit achieved approximately 90% NOx reduction<\/strong>, corresponding to IMO Tier III emission levels<\/strong>, on 2,190 kW MAN two-stroke main engines<\/strong> originally manufactured in 1990<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project Scope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The project scope covered the retrofit of existing vessels with marine SCR systems<\/strong>, designed to operate within the technical constraints of legacy two-stroke engines and limited available space.
The installation was coordinated with the vessels\u2019 scheduled class renewal<\/strong> to minimize off-hire time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engineering Assessment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A feasibility study was conducted to define the relevant engine operating conditions and installation constraints, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Exhaust gas temperature range<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Exhaust gas mass flow<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Available space in the engine room and funnel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    To accurately confirm installation feasibility, 3D laser scanning<\/strong> was performed in the funnel area, where space limitations were most critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    System Design<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Based on the collected data, Ecoexhaust developed a custom SCR system and adapted the main engine exhaust configuration accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The design included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Compact SCR reactor geometry suitable for limited funnel space and restricted exhaust gas backpressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Bypass valves allowing engine operation without SCR, reducing catalyst exposure during non-SCR operation<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Optimized exhaust gas distribution upstream of the catalyst<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      CFD calculations <\/strong>were used to verify the static mixer design and confirm uniform flow distribution across the catalyst blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Manufacturing, Installation and Commissioning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The SCR systems were manufactured by Ecoexhaust and delivered to the shipyard during the vessels\u2019 class renewal period. Installation was carried out under the supervision of Ecoexhaust engineers, followed by: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • System calibration<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Sea trials under operational conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Ecoexhaust participated in the certification process with DNV<\/strong>, supporting the documentation required for emission compliance and NOx reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Results<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        • Approx. 90% NOx reduction achieved<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • IMO Tier III-equivalent emission performance<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Reduced NOx tax exposure under the Norwegian scheme<\/li>\n\n\n\n
